Last night we watched American Pickers and they found and picked a Cracker Jacks dispenser machine. It had been a while since I had Cracker Jacks and I mentioned it to Mari. She went to a gas station next to the hotel and found some. First of all it did not come in the card box like it used but a bag. They prize was paper puppet with a couple of jokes. Here are the jokes. 1) What did the alien say to the plant? 2) What do planets read?
Answers: 1) Take me to your weeder! 2) Comet books!
The continental breakfast was pretty good. You can make your own Belgium waffle. Well Mari is wanting me to get ready to go.
We made it to the cabin in Custer, SD around 5pm MST. On the way here we made a few stops in between Chamberlain and here. The first place we stopped at was the Old West Trading Post back across the river in Oacoma. They had kind of a flea market outside the trading post. Saw a couple of things, but they were expensive. Went inside and got signed up on their register. When you do you get a free roll, coffee and a coupon for $2.50 off of a purchase. Did you know you can get a German chocolate long john. It tasted good. Mari and I walked around but only found a couple of souvenirs for family members and only had to pay 50¢. Heck of a bargain.
The second place we stopped was at the car museum, Pioneer Auto in Murdo, SD. Got to see the "original" General Lee car from the TV show Dukes of Hazard. The ticket guy even played the horn. Don't know much about cars but liked looking at them. They even had a few old motorcycles. Found some neat antique fire truck pedal cars. Wish I still had the one I had growing up in Montana. They had several buildings/outbuildings with cars basically from every era from the turn of the 1900's. Last time we went through this area Breack, Michelle and Phoenix had gone here while the rest of the family went to the 1880's Town just down the interstate. They had some unique cars, one of kinds. One of the main reasons we stopped here was because that darn History Channel show American Pickers. While we were at the hotel last night we had watched a couple episodes. One episode showed them picking through the South Dakota area and they had picked the Antique Car place. They even had a few pictures Mike Wolfe getting into a couple of the cars. From here we ran into the truck stop/SubWay to grab a couple of sandwiches. We decided we would go to Badlands National Park and have pic-a-nic lunch (yes, misspelt based off Yogi bear).
We stopped near the entrance and did some climbing on the rocks. Even though it rain last night the water had already dried up. We stopped at the visitor center were they had some outside tables under shade shelters. While eating I noticed that there was ranger and some archeologist's digging just on the north side of the visitor center. Are you curious what they were looking for? I was, I briefly talked to the ranger. She said that last year a kid had found a partially uncovered animal skull. They dug it up and found that it was some kinda prehistoric mammal. Sorry, she told me and I already forgot. Inside the visitor center it talks about what the area looked liked 20,000 years ago. I found Mari in the souvenir with a handful of stuff to buy. From here we decided not to take to loop through the badlands back up to Wall. Instead we took the back way to Rapid City on highway 44. Really not a lot to see but plus side it was scenic, and a lot traffic.On the way out of the park we did find a dinosaur roaming a field. I was able to snap this picture before it disappeared back into the trees.
Once in Rapid City we thought we stop at WalMart to get a few groceries for the cabin. Talk about crazy, getting into and out of the parking lot was nuts. People not paying attention while driving and walking. It was like the carnival bumper cars. We got food for breakfast and supper for a couple of days. Also filled up the car before continuing on to Custer.
Finally, in Custer. Found the cabin fairly quickly. They have several units and it looks like we are the only ones here...for now. Basically a two room unit, with a bathroom. The main room is a combination kitchen /television room with a bathroom of to the side. The back room is the bedroom with a double/queen bed. Nice for the exception that it does not have air conditioning, no outside reception for television and no WiFi. As .long as you keep the shades closed and windows closed during the day the cabin stays fairly comfortable. As for WiFi, I'm using my mobile phone. Mari ran to a movie rental store and got a couple of movies for tonight.
